

Neurophos’ $110M Series A is a strong signal that energy-efficient AI acceleration is becoming a board-level priority—not just for hyperscalers, but for every industry building AI-driven customer experiences.
AI has moved far beyond “training big models in the lab” and into always-on, production-grade inference—powering chat experiences, product recommendations, creative testing, customer support routing, fraud checks, and real-time personalization.
That shift matters because inference is continuous: every query, every customer session, every ad auction, every content decision triggers compute, and the volume rises with every new channel, language, and use case.
Data centres are now running into very real constraints—energy availability, cooling limits, rack density ceilings, and operating costs—especially as inference workloads grow. Traditional silicon GPUs remain the default for accelerated AI, but scaling them can become an expensive race against power budgets and infrastructure limits.

Neurophos is positioning itself around a specific claim: AI compute can be made dramatically more energy efficient by shifting key calculations from electrons to photons. The company has raised $110 million in an oversubscribed Series A round, bringing total funding to $118 million.
The round was led by Gates Frontier, with participation from M12 (Microsoft’s venture fund), Carbon Direct Capital, Aramco Ventures, Bosch Ventures, Tectonic Ventures, and Space Capital, among others. A longer list of participants has also been reported, including DNX Ventures, Geometry, MetaVC Partners, Morgan Creek Capital, Silicon Catalyst Ventures, Gaingels, and more.
At the centre of Neurophos’ platform is an optical processing unit (OPU) designed to run AI calculations using light. Neurophos says its chip integrates more than one million micron-scale optical processing elements on a single device. The company claims this architecture can deliver up to 100x better performance and energy efficiency than today’s leading chips, while fitting into existing data-centre environments as a “drop-in” alternative to GPUs.
A key enabling step, according to the reporting, is Neurophos’ development of micron-scale metamaterial optical modulators that are said to be 10,000 times smaller than prior photonic elements—unlocking much higher density for practical photonic computing. SiliconANGLE also reports that Neurophos integrates these modulators with compute-in-memory approaches to reduce data movement and accelerate matrix operations central to AI workloads.
The “why now” is straightforward: Moore’s Law-style gains are slowing, while AI demand is compounding. Neurophos’ leadership frames photonics as a physics-level scaling lever—arguing that optical parallelism can push both throughput and efficiency forward without immediately slamming into the same power walls constraining GPU-heavy growth.

If data centres and cloud providers can run inference with materially better efficiency, it can eventually flow downstream into pricing, product packaging, and the feasibility of deploying more advanced models into everyday workflows.
Neurophos says the Series A funding will accelerate its first integrated photonic compute system, including data-centre-ready OPU modules, a full software stack, and early-access hardware for developers. The company also plans to expand in Austin and open an engineering site in San Francisco to support early demand.
SiliconANGLE further reports that Neurophos is aiming to move from proof-of-concept toward real-world validation and manufacturing timelines, including a data-centre pilot partnership (reported as Terakraft) and target windows for complete systems and scaled production.
