In a groundbreaking global Pay-1 agreement, Netflix has executed an agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) that provides Netflix with a 100% exclusive license for worldwide streaming of Sony films after theatrical and home video releases. The licensing program will begin this year and by 2029, every region in the world will gain access via Netflix.
As part of the agreement, Netflix’s previously established Pay-1 licensing abilities in select countries will be expanded to include U.S., Germany, and Southeast Asia, where movies such as Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Uncharted, Venom: Let There Be Carnage are available. In addition, Netflix will license library titles from select Sony movies and TV series under this deal.
Netflix Executive Lauren Smith expressed the value of this deal when she stated that it strengthens their capabilities to serve their subscribers worldwide, while Sony Executive Paul Littmann echoed this sentiment by stating that the deal will strengthen collaboration between Netflix and Sony and will generate more demand for Sony films and theatrical events.
Other films scheduled to be released on Netflix under this deal include: The Nightingale, Sony Pictures Animation Buds, Nintendo’s Live-Action The Legend of Zelda, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, and Sam Mendes’ Beatles film series.
In conclusion, this landmark agreement furthers Netflix’s positioning as an industry-leading global streaming service while simultaneously ensuring that Sony films are available to audiences around the world. This establishes a solid foundation for both companies as they continue to dominate the ever-evolving entertainment marketplace.
