In a strategic move reflecting its ambitions in the competitive fintech landscape, Pine Labs has appointed Shalini Pillai as its Chief Marketing Officer. This appointment, announced recently, underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing its global presence through robust marketing leadership.

Pine Labs: A Fintech Pioneer

Pine Labs traces its roots back to 1998, when founders Lokvir Kapoor, Rajul Garg, and Tarun Upadhyay established the company initially focusing on petroleum retail automation solutions. Recognizing untapped potential in broader retail payments, the firm pivoted in the mid-2000s to provide point-of-sale (PoS) technology, marking its entry into merchant payments and financial services.

Over the years, Pine Labs has evolved into a full-stack payments platform, serving merchants across retail, hospitality, and e-commerce sectors. Key milestones include the 2019 acquisition of gifting startup Qwikcilver for $110 million, which bolstered its solutions for stored-value cards and loyalty programs. Today, the company powers transactions for hundreds of financial institutions and consumer brands, processing billions in volume annually.

Under CEO B. Amrish Rau, who was elevated to Chairman and Managing Director in 2025 ahead of IPO preparations, Pine Labs has achieved profitability in recent quarters, such as the June quarter of FY26. The firm is gearing up for a public listing, targeting a valuation between $4-5 billion, with plans to raise funds through fresh shares and an offer for sale. This financial strengthening positions Pine Labs to invest aggressively in innovation and expansion.

Shalini Pillai: A Seasoned Marketing Leader

Shalini Pillai, often referred to as Shalini Pillai Banerjee in professional circles, brings over two decades of experience in marketing across technology, consumer goods, and entrepreneurship. Her career trajectory showcases a rare blend of corporate leadership at global giants and hands-on startup building, making her an ideal fit for Pine Labs’ growth phase.

Pillai’s journey began in the fast-paced world of consumer packaged goods. From 2002 to 2005, she served as Assistant Manager at Coca-Cola India, handling sales, brand management, and media planning assignments that honed her skills in consumer insights and market activation. These early roles instilled a deep understanding of brand storytelling and customer engagement in competitive markets.

Transitioning to integrated marketing, Pillai took on the role of Branch Director at Eventus Integrated Management Pvt Ltd from 2005 to 2009. There, she drove business generation and crafted micro-marketing strategies for clients in FMCG, IT, BFSI, and entertainment sectors, emphasizing tailored campaigns that delivered measurable results.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and Innovation

Demonstrating her risk-taking spirit, Pillai co-founded BrandIdea Consultancy Pvt Ltd in 2009, serving as Director until 2015. The firm developed SaaS solutions for market planning, sales and marketing analytics, ROI modeling, targeting, and segmentation—tools designed to empower businesses with data-driven decision-making. This entrepreneurial stint equipped her with firsthand experience in scaling products from ideation to market, a perspective invaluable in today’s tech-driven economy.

Pillai’s foray into tech marketing accelerated with her eight-year tenure at Google India, starting in June 2016 as Head of Marketing for India SMB. In this role, she spearheaded initiatives to drive customer acquisition and enhance experiences across Google Advertising Platforms, particularly targeting small and medium businesses. By August 2020, she advanced to Head of GPay and NBU Marketing, and later to Head of Consumer Apps Marketing in December 2022, where she shaped go-to-market strategies for high-impact products.

In August 2024, Pillai joined Microsoft as Marketing Director for India and South Asia, focusing on growth and innovation across Azure, Modern Work, and Security portfolios, amplified by AI integrations. Her time at Microsoft emphasized enterprise solutions and regional brand building, bridging B2B and B2C worlds seamlessly.

The Strategic Fit at Pine Labs

In her new role at Pine Labs, Pillai will lead the global marketing strategy, product marketing, communications, and brand positioning. This encompasses everything from merchant relationship nurturing to amplifying the company’s technological edge in payments infrastructure.

B. Amrish Rau, CEO of Pine Labs, praised her appointment, noting, “Shalini brings deep technology-led marketing experience across both B2C and B2B global big techs. Her long tenures in scaling digital products, building data-driven growth engines, and driving integrated brand and product marketing give her a full-stack perspective.” Rau’s confidence stems from Pillai’s proven ability to navigate complex ecosystems, much like Pine Labs’ own evolution from niche automation to global commerce enabler.

Pillai herself expressed enthusiasm: “The next era of fintech is defined by integrated infrastructure that powers global commerce. Sitting at the intersection of merchant relationships and sovereign-scale technology, Pine Labs provides the unified engine turning consumer intent into immediate execution. I am eager to drive our integrated market strategy, scaling Pine Labs’ footprint to deliver compounding commercial value on a global scale.”

This hire aligns with Pine Labs’ recent advancements, including a high-profile collaboration with OpenAI announced in February 2026. The partnership embeds OpenAI’s APIs into Pine Labs’ AI-native infrastructure, pioneering “Agentic Commerce”—where systems autonomously optimize transaction workflows beyond mere recording. Pillai’s tech background positions her to communicate these innovations effectively to merchants, developers, and partners.

Broader Implications for Leadership in Fintech

Pillai’s appointment arrives at a pivotal moment for Pine Labs, as it integrates AI across payment products and developer tools while preparing for IPO scrutiny. Her expertise in data-driven growth and product scaling will be crucial in differentiating Pine Labs amid rivals like Paytm, Razorpay, and PhonePe, which dominate India’s digital payments surge.

From a leadership standpoint, Pillai represents the archetype of a versatile executive: someone who has thrived in multinational corporations, launched ventures, and now steers a unicorn towards public markets. Her Indian School of Business MBA in Marketing further bolsters her strategic acumen. Active in networks like TiE Mumbai, she embodies the collaborative spirit essential for fintech’s ecosystem-driven success.

As Pine Labs eyes global expansion, Pillai’s track record—spanning consumer apps at Google, enterprise at Microsoft, and analytics startups—equips her to craft narratives that resonate across borders. Expect campaigns that highlight seamless PoS integrations, AI-enhanced security, and merchant empowerment, all while building lasting brand equity.

In fintech, where trust and innovation intersect, leaders like Pillai bridge technology’s complexity with user-centric simplicity. Her integration into Pine Labs signals not just a marketing upgrade, but a holistic push towards sustainable, scalable commerce solutions. With the company’s profitability milestone and AI partnerships, this chapter promises dynamic growth under her guidance.
