Microsoft AI has named Andréa Mallard, the former top marketer at Pinterest, as its chief marketing officer. The move bolsters the division’s efforts to make AI a trusted, everyday technology as competition in the space intensifies.
Mallard started the role earlier this month, she confirmed on LinkedIn. “AI is the most consequential technological shift of my lifetime,” she wrote, stressing the importance of responsible leadership to build public trust for future generations.
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Microsoft AI, launched in 2024 and headed by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman. This unit oversees key consumer products like the Copilot AI assistant, plus Bing, Edge, and GroupMe—all now powered by generative AI features. Microsoft has poured billions into OpenAI and woven its tech across Azure cloud services and other platforms. Just late last year, the division unveiled fresh branding and a revamped website to sharpen its message amid rising rivals.
Hiring a marketing heavyweight like Mallard signals the scramble among tech giants to humanize complex AI. Nvidia recently poached Google exec Alison Wagonfeld for its first CMO role. These leaders aim to turn cutting-edge tech into brands people actually trust and use.
At Pinterest, where she spent seven years until January, Mallard was global CMO and later handled external communications. She scaled the marketing team, steered the company through its 2019 IPO, and navigated Covid disruptions. Pinterest quickly replaced her with Claudine Cheever, ex-Amazon VP of global brand and marketing.
Mallard’s arrival positions Microsoft AI to lead the charge in making generative tech approachable and reliable. As the AI arms race heats up, her expertise could prove decisive in winning over consumers and cementing Microsoft’s edge.
