SAN FRANCISCO – Airbnb has officially appointed Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta’s former head of generative AI, as its new Chief Technology Officer, signaling a radical shift toward an AI-first travel platform. Announced Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, by CEO Brian Chesky, the hire marks a “pivotal moment” for the company as it attempts to move beyond short-term rentals and evolve into a comprehensive, AI-driven travel companion.
Al-Dahle, who previously led the team behind Meta’s Llama models, brings nearly two decades of deep technical experience to Airbnb.
The appointment follows the departure of long-time tech chief Ari Balogh, who stepped down in December after a seven-year tenure. Balogh, a former Google executive, is transitioning into an advisory role as the company overhauls its core infrastructure.
The hiring comes as Airbnb undergoes its largest transformation since its inception. By integrating AI agents into the app, the company is expanding into:
With Al-Dahle at the helm of engineering, Airbnb is positioning itself as more than a marketplace; it is aiming to become the “Amazon of travel services.” While Chesky previously noted that current chatbots like ChatGPT were “not quite robust enough” for travel’s complexities, the recruitment of a top-tier GenAI pioneer suggests Airbnb is ready to build its own bespoke solutions. As the platform integrates 800+ dynamic factors into its AI-driven visibility signals, the move signals a high-stakes bet that the future of hospitality will be won by the most intelligent interface.
